How does Plaid Dog use crowdfunding to help artists make albums?

Our crowdfunding platform is designed specifically for musicians, helping them raise the funds needed to create professional recordings at our studio — without any out-of-pocket expenses.

Do I retain ownership of my music?

Yes. Unlike traditional record labels, we take no ownership stake in your music. You maintain 100% ownership and control over your creative work.

Do I need to pay any fees to get started?

No, artists don’t pay any upfront fees. Plaid Dog covers any initial studio expenses and recoups those costs through the crowdfunding campaign, so the artist doesn’t need to front any money.

Who will produce my album?

Our team of experienced producers will work closely with you to bring your artistic vision to life. You can also choose to use your own musicians or tap into our network of top-tier session players.

Do you offer marketing and promotional support?

Yes. Our marketing efforts are focused specifically within the context of your crowdfunding campaign. We’ve developed a proven system to help you raise funds consistently and reliably. While we assist with campaign-related marketing and promotions, we do not provide general artist marketing or promotion beyond the scope of the campaign.

What is the typical timeline of a project?
  • Preparation (recording single & preparing campaign): 6 weeks
  • Fundraising campaign: 6 weeks
  • Post-campaign (recording & production): several weeks to a few months, depending on project size

In total, the typical timeline runs 3 to 6 months, with flexibility based on the project’s scope and the artist’s availability.

Do you provide lodging?

Yes. For non-local artists, we offer free lodging in a private room upstairs from the studio — comfortable and convenient while you work on your project.

What recording costs are covered?

The funds raised cover all essential recording costs, including:

  • Studio time
  • Engineering
  • Mixing and mastering
Can we hire session musicians?

Yes. If you choose, you can hire from our network of session musicians. Their fees are covered by the funds raised through your campaign.

What makes Plaid Dog’s campaigns more successful?

We achieve an 80% campaign success rate, compared to the industry average of 30%. Our focus on crowdfunding lets us design campaigns specifically for independent artists, with tailored support and tools throughout the process.

How much do artists typically raise through your platform?

Our campaigns raise $9,000 to $10,000 on average — double the typical $4,000 to $5,000 raised by most music crowdfunding efforts.

What happens if I don’t reach my goal?

Our campaigns use flexible funding, so the money raised can still be used to record your project even if the goal isn’t fully reached. And you won’t be responsible for covering any shortfall.

Do you charge platform fees?

No. We don’t charge platform fees. That 5% savings goes back into your project — more material recorded, a better final product.
